CE Editor-in-Chief Matthew Edelstein speaks to make-up artist and style icon
in the making, Kristin Gallegos about fashion, vices and icons.

Matthew Edelstein: Where are you from? How long have you lived in New York City?
Kristin Gallegos: I’m from the LBC. Long Beach, California!
I’ve been in New York City for six years now and I feel like a New Yorker.
I’ve never really been much of a California girl, can’t you tell?
ME: How do you use fashion in your daily life?
KG: I live it!
ME: What inspires your personal style?
KG: I just like what I like. Mostly I wear all black but I mix in
a few things that are white or grey. I like interesting shapes and silhouettes.
I’m obsessed with the 60′s and the 90′s so I guess I get inspiration from
the past but I do it in a modern way. I love music and pop culture and that’s
also a big influence.
ME: What designers do you love?
KG: I live for Rick Owens! He’s definitely my favorite but I also love
Ann Demeulemeester, Givenchy, Prada, Margiela (when he was still designing),
Comme des Garçons, Junya Watanabe, Azzedine Alaïa, Balenciaga,
and I will always be a Chanel girl!!
ME: What’s your favorite article of clothing?
KG: I have sooo many faves!!! I guess if I had to choose one I’d say a black 90′s,
long-sleeved Azzedine Alaïa dress. OR a white Ann Demeulemeester blazer.
I can’t pick just one!
ME: Who are your style icons?
KG: Edie Sedgwick, Patti Smith, Siouxsie Sioux, Penelope Tree and Carine Roitfeld.
ME: What’s the best gift you ever received?
KG: All of my ex-boyfriend’s ratty rock and roll t-shirts. They’re perfectly worn in.
Achieved only by having a dirty boy wear them for a decade. They’re amazing.
ME: What’s your guilty pleasure?
KG: Justin Bieber! I have Bieber fever…I need help!

ME: What’s on your ipod at the moment?
KG: My ipod is all over the place. I have a mix of things.
I mostly listen to The Beatles, The Smiths, Joy Division, New Order,
Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Smashing Pumpkins, and The Rolling Stones.
But I always throw in some pop, brit pop, 90′s dance, and hip hop.
ME: Defining moment of your life so far?
KG: Moving to New York City! I saved up money for a year to come and
the only person I knew here was also from California.
I never once had to ask my parents for help. My career as a make-up
artist really started when I moved here. It changed my life.
I’m really proud of myself for creating the life I always wanted.
ME: What’s your greatest ambition?
KG: To get a beauty contract AND be a Rock Star.
ME: What’s your biggest vice?
KG: It’s really a toss up between cigarettes and shopping. I currently
have them both under control! Here’s hoping.
ME: Who is at your fantasy dinner party?
KG: John Lennon and Yoko Ono, Andy Warhol and Edie Sedgwick, Larry David,
Mikhail Baryshnikov, and as my date/boyfriend Luke Perry circa Beverly Hills 90210.
Swoon!
ME: What’s your favorite city?
KG: New York City of course. I always wanted to be here and it never gets old for me.
It’s the greatest city in the world. I also love Paris.
ME: Place you want to visit the most?
KG: I’m dying to go to Berlin. I know I’m going to love it.
I also really need to go to Spain and see the homeland asap!
ME: When are you at your happiest?
KG: When I’m with the people I love!
ME: What’s your greatest achievement?
KG: My bangs.
