CE Editor-in-Chief Matthew Edelstein speaks to student, party girl
and budding fashion executive Amanda Doman.

Matthew Edelstein: Where are you from?
How long have you lived in New York City?
Amanda Doman: Born and raised in New York City.
22 years and counting….
ME: How do you use fashion in your daily life?
AD: Wearing it! I think everything we choose to wear,
whether we’re conscious of it or not, is a way of expressing
and using fashion. There’s something to be said about people who
claim to have no interest in fashion — making the decision
not to buy a particular brand or catch on to a trend
is a statement in itself.

ME: What does fashion mean to you?
AD: To me, fashion is a visual timeline.
It’s constantly changing but there’s always
a connection to the past. I love the idea that certain colors,
textures, and even silhouettes can come back.
ME: What inspires your personal style?
AD: Everything; my mood, the people around me,
movies, music, literature. I work for an amazing designer
named Lisa Perry. One of her signature colors is hot pink.
Usually, I’m in black, but recently I’ve become obsessed with pink!
Pink and I are taking it slow of course…
first time was a cashmere sweater… next will probably be shoes.

ME: What designers do you love?
AD: Christopher Kane, Versus, Miu Miu, Prada, Jil Sander,
Mary Katrantzou, Mark Fast, Alexander Wang,
Proenza Schouler, Charlotte Olympia, Balenciaga,
Atsuko Kudo, Agent Provocateur. For spring,
I’m loving neon colors, white, almond, cantaloupe.
The clean cuts to the diagonal lines, bright prints,
and even the fabric. I’m super into colored fur right now!
ME: What’s your favorite article of clothing?
AD: Leather Tripp NYC pants which I’ve worn to death,
PS1 bag, Issey Myake minidress, Agent Provocateur barbed wire bra,
green Phillip Lim brogues. I also love to wear printed dress socks
(taxis, planets, piano keys!). I buy everything with my own money
so I cherish it even more.
ME: Who are your style icons?
AD: Jennifer Connelly, Jen Brill, Lapo Elkann, Anna Dello Russo,
Carine and Julia Roitfeld, Tom Ford.

ME: What’s the best gift you’ve ever received?
AD: Friendship and love based on compassion, understanding,
and humor…. oh, and my Rolex.
ME: What’s your guilty pleasure?
AD: Whiskey, red wine, changing my hair color,
and bouncing my cat up and down to rap.
ME: What’s on your ipod at the moment?
AD: Phantogram, Red Café, Jay-Z, Melody Kills, Caribou,
Placebo, Moby, Interpol. A ton of hip hop, 60′s, 80′s, 90′s music.
Too many to name.
ME: What’s your greatest ambition?
AD: To find long term happiness and live a balanced life.
To be surrounded by the people I love. To laugh everyday.
To travel the world.
ME: What’s your biggest vice?
AD: Seeing the same movies repeatedly.
Shopping. I gave up smoking 3 months ago and replaced it
with ass-kicking workouts.

ME: Who is at your fantasy dinner party?
AD: My grandmothers, my best friends,
Denzel Washington, Larry David, Anthony Bourdain,
Charles Bukowski, Erving Goffman, and my past loves.
ME: What’s your favorite city?
AD: Manhattan!
ME: Place you want to visit the most?
AD: Shanghai, New Zealand, Egypt.
ME: What are your favorite night spots?
AD: Bowery Hotel.
ME: When are you at your happiest?
AD: When I’m surrounded by people I love.
Eating a good meal. Watching movies in bed.
Overcoming an obstacle.
ME: What’s your greatest achievement?
AD: Becoming a senior buyer at 21.
Hiking 100 miles cross country in a week.
