CE Editor-in-Chief Matthew Edelstein speaks to model and photographer
Julian Schratter about fashion, photography and smoking weed.

Matthew Edelstein: Where are you from? How long have you lived in New York City?
Julian Schratter: I’m from the Bay Area in Northern California.
I’ve been in New York since 2007

ME: How do you use fashion in your daily life?
JS: to my advantage! I’ve been given this opportunity to have
an insiders view of an industry that is very glamorized, publicized and talked about.
So I bought a camera to take pictures of everything.

ME: What does fashion mean to you?
JS: What it means to everybody;
“The prevailing style or custom, as in dress or behavior.”
That’s from the dictionary.

ME: What inspires your personal style?
JS: Hand-me-downs, too much denim, fucking swag,
and sometimes a womens dress.

ME: What designers do you love?
JS: All of them. They’re all successful people doing what they love.
I appreciate that.

ME: What’s your favorite articles of clothing?
JS: Push Culture hoodie, and my hat.

ME: Who are your style icons?
JS: My 9 year old nephew, Michael Jordan and Travis Davenport.

ME: What’s the best gift you’ve ever received?
JS: Life. Thanks Mom.

ME: What’s your guilty pleasure?
JS: If you’ve ever looked at my blog, throughjuleslens.blogspot.com
you’ll know that I smoke weed. I could camouflage it and say “puff trees”,
“blow clouds” or “burn herb.” I could tell you that it’s “medicinal” or that
I’m from Northern California and just a product of my environment.
But I’ll keep it real, I smoke weed. It blows my mind that it’s fucking illegal.
Don’t get me started! But until its legal, I suppose that’s my “guilty” pleasure.

ME: What’s on your ipod at the moment?
JS: Earl Sweatshirt, Matisyahu, Radiohead, Yelawolf, Big Sean.
And 100 other gigabytes of awesome fucking tunes.

ME: Defining moment of your life so far?
JS: Meeting you.

ME: What’s your greatest ambition?
JS: To be ambitious forever.

ME: What’s your biggest vice?
JS: Late night chocolate overdose

ME: Who is at your fantasy dinner party?
JS: Jay-Z, Matisyahu, Michael Jordan, Terry Richardson,
Tupac, Jesus, Charlie Sheen, Tyler the Creator.
Fuck, can you imagine the conversation around that table?!
Oh and Bob. I know its a cliché but I’d love to smoke an
“after dinner” joint with Mr. Marley.
And all my homies can come too but B.Y.O.B.
“This ain’t no funky reggae party, $5 at the door”.

ME: What’s your favorite city?
JS: I havnt’ decided yet.

ME: Place you want to visit the most?
JS: The top.

ME: What are your favorite night spots?
JS: Wherever there’s good beer on tap. Or my bed.

ME: When are you at your happiest?
JS: When I’m taking pictures.

ME: What’s your greatest achievement?
JS: My greatest achievement will be to never have a greatest achievement.
What happens once you have one? Then what?
