SAY HELLO TO
CURTIS KULIG
Johnny Misheff speak to artist and writer Curtis Kulig about graffiti,
photography and his favorite New York City haunts.

Johnny Misheff: Where did you grow up?
Do you think it had an overall affect on how you turned out?
Curtis Kulig: I grew up in Minot, North Dakota.
It’s totally flat with extreme temperatures.
Lots of punk rock shows and skateboarding. Now I’m in New York City.
It’s not flat but it does have extreme temperatures, nightclubs
and skateboarding. Similar but different.
JM: You’ve been bi-coastal for some time now. What’s the difference
between living on the east coast versus the west?
CK: The west coast makes me lazy. The weather’s too consistent
and the driving takes a toll on my back and my brain.

JM: Talk about how you came to New York a few years ago
and immediately started making your mark.
CK: I moved here with a girl, fucked it all up with her
and just started working obsessively to get my mind off of it.
JM: What’s your take on the beef in and amongst the graffiti community?
CK: The beef is just part of graffiti.
But it’s not why I do what I do.
I like to climb things and write on things.
That’s why I do what I do.
